Neil Gaiman gives an
update
on Netflix' 11 episode adaptation of The
Sandman due for release next year.

With Neil Gaiman on board, it should be as faithful and
accurate and tv budgets would allow, I thought. Until I
got this far in the interview.

"... if we were creating this character now, what
gender would the character be?"

Oh dear.

What a weird take Digital Spy has, since they seem to think he’s specifically talking about Morpheus, when I think Gaiman is speaking in general.

 QUOTE:
"'Okay, it is 2020, let's say that I was doing Sandman starting in 2020, what would we do? How would we change things? What gender would this character be? Who would this person be? What would be happening?'" Gaiman said.

It doesn’t seem inappropriate to update characters for 2020. Wanda wouldn’t and shouldn’t (and won’t) be written in the same way as she was in the 90s, for example.

Oh, I had certainly interpreted the comment as him
talking about Morpheus, which struck me as wholly
unnecessary.
If that's not the case, nothing to see here.

Well, since the character is called Sandman, his gender is rather obvious.

He's the original creator, so he/she/they can be whatever he wants it to be. Bring on the Sandtrans!

Keep in mind that as the personification of dreams, Morpheus doesn't have a single form. He's also a cat. And a plant. And a fox. And other things.

But one of the main themes in THE SANDMAN is Morpheus' past treatment of his mortal lovers and how it bites him back in the present, as well as his attempts to fix the damage he did to them, so I don't expect his gender to be changed.
