On a side note, the covers Joe Jusko is doing for the new releases of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan books are fantastic.

Have to disagree we some of the assessment of Alexs’ work. His style has changed so much over the years and I’d say a lot of his stuff has become more dynamic in composition and figure work. I definitely see a lot of John Buscema influence in his current stuff and he has really been pushing the anatomy of the characters in that direction and also now showing muscle popping through the uniforms which he definitely avoided in much of Marvels and Kingdom Come. The only thing I’d say would be a drawback are the pieces that look like the characters are heavily lit and are standing around and judging you......or that could be just me being self conscious.

Judgmental superheroes has become too much of a theme in Ross’ work. So many shots of a disdainful Superman looking down at us with something bordering on a sneer curling his lip.

Yup, but I think he’s left that particular trope behind now. That Queen Bohemian Rhapsody album cover has a lot to answer for! The action scenes are the ones I’m always amazed by. He did a incredible New Gods piece over a year ago that I wish they’d release a print of. The sketches are always appealing as well. So much power in them before they’re polished up.

I’ve long been frustrated by artists sketches vs the finished work. Boris Vallejo was one such. The sketches burst with energy, the paintings became posed models.

Makes me glad I did not pursue painting.

Speaking of purchasing art...

A John Byrne commission is still on my wish list, so my fingers remain crossed that our honorable host will become available for those again soon.
