I wish The Futurians had continued with Cockrum. It was fun! I liked how, in the comic book series, he would reference with footnotes stories from homemade comics that he did with the characters in his youthful fan days.

Does anyone remember how Rob Liefeld acquired the rights to Futurians in the mid-1990s, and was going to do a new series? Brrrr.

"But I still don't think a huge metal fist hitting human flesh (or something like it) would go BOM!"

Huh. I wonder if that might have been intended to be a clue about the upcoming reveal.

Count me as a FUTURIANS fan, too! I have the Marvel graphic
novel and the short-lived series. I believe there was a
hardcover book that collected the 3 issues of the series
and the unpublished 4th issue that wrapped up the story?

I love Cockrum's art.  I first saw it on the Legion; his updated LSH costume designs were amazing.

His pairing with Gil Kane, doing the inks, on the first issue of John Carter (and the second cover), was stunning.

Legend has it that it was just such a pairing, on the cover of GSXM 1, that gave us the modified version of Wolverine's mask.

Legend has it.

Bob McLeod is posting pencils from Dave's X-Men issue of Marvel Fanfare that he inked. As some others have pointed out, Dave's second run at Marvel was well drawn but that his art lost some of that dynamic storytelling he was known. Much less bombastic for sure but looking at the pencils, Dave still had a certain style for drawing faces and eyes that got lost under McLeod's inks.

I used to love how Dave drew Wolverine's mask until JB came along, to my eyes no one else ever drew it as well as JB.

Eric comes back to the point and actually helps say what I was clumsily trying to do in my original - when Dave returned to the X-Men his art was not worse in any way, I think it just got taken over by overpowering inks. And I, personally, think that they were incompatable. I hadn't considered the publishing schedule change possibly having an effect though.

One thing that struck me early on was that Dave seemed to think like an animator. His panels tended to be built in layers, not along perspective grids.

Do you have a link by any chance?  I looked and could not find them, but sure would love to see the pencils.
