Joel Schumacher, director of LOST BOYS, FLATLINERS, ST. ELMO'S FIRE and a couple of films with a guy in a Bat costume, has passed away at age 80.

I enjoyed most of his films that didn't involve Batman.

RIP

He was more miss than hit as a director, to my eyes, but I very much enjoyed THE LOST BOYS, FLATLINERS and yes, BATMAN FOREVER.  I even watched ST. ELMO'S FIRE and D.C. CAB probably one too many times during their cable-TV heyday.

BATMAN & ROBIN, though, was a rightful dud, but his public mea culpa was quite admirable.  Makes me wish more directors would do the same, when they churn out some stinkers.

In interviews, he seemed like quite the warm, charming personality, too.  It feels like a lot of the harsher anti-B&R brigade came to re-appreciate him over the years.

RIP

I love THE LOST BOYS and A TIME TO KILL and ST. ELMO'S FIRE has that 80's charm to it.  He had a varied career, for sure.  I'd rather remember the stuff I like than worry about what I didn't.

Sad news. Yes, he made the two worst Batman movies ever, but he also made FALLING DOWN and THE LOST BOYS.

BATMAN AND ROBIN would have been garbage no matter who directed it. Casting is what saved it from being totally horrible.

BATMAN FOREVER, though? Tommy Lee Jones was wasted (and probably wished he was the other kind of wasted....), and lets not forget the addition of nipples to Batman and Robin's costumes. The less said about the Riddler's costume at the end, the better.

(Isn't it time to move past the "Bat nipples?"  Does that really bother anyone past their teen years?)

COUSINS is a favorite. Hard to believe that the guy who
made that warm, sweet and funny film also made the dark,
twisted 8MM.

Sorry to hear.

I'll still watch THE LOST BOYS, even if just to get to the very last scene.

Talented director, though his output was uneven. By all accounts, a lovely person. I still have a soft spot for Lost Boys, don't mind Batman Forever, hate Batman & Robin, and think Falling Down is a wonderful film.
