Talk of JB's output got me thinking about the time he was drawing Avengers, FF and X-Men at the same time. We know that scheduling means books on sale together weren't always produced at the same time, but in 1979 JB had 37 books on the stands!
He also found time to write a Hulk Annual and I'm wondering if the two FF issues originally intended for Coca-Cola might have been produced during this time? Depending on how long they were sitting around they might been drawn in '78 when he only had 21 books on the stand, the slacker!

Wow, what has just dawned on me, seeing that image, is that JB was drawing all three flagship team books @ the same time.
That really is incredible

From the late 70s on well into the 80s, Byrne was Marvel and Marvel was Byrne

Wow! I had always considered '79 as my favorite comic collecting year, this may be the underlying reason why!

There was a drawing by JB from this period where a few members of the FF, Avengers, and X-Men are watching JB draw at his drawing board, each one of them appearing mixed up in parts with characters from the other teams, remarking that maybe JB has taken on too many titles.

BTW, X-MEN was far from a "flagship" book in those days! ___________________________________ * One of the reasons I stopped, for many years, commenting on what I thought was amiss in my own work was that I grew tired of the mail that would come in a few weeks after such an interview was published. All these people writing as if it was their idea!

From the late 70s on well into the 80s, Byrne was Marvel and Marvel was Byrne•• Back in the 90s I flipped thru a Marvel coffee-table book, and was struck by how many times I saw my name pop up. "It's like I'm half of Mavel's history," I said. Then I did the math. Taking Marvel as we know it as having begun in 1961, at that point I WAS half of their history! Not bad for that little kid who was so nervous about buying FF 5!

AVENGERS #187 was probably the most haunting comic book I ever held in my 7-year old hands at the time.
Creepy and captivating!

Even if publication dates are not in line with the production schedule it is still impressive. I don't think anyone has produced what must be 4-5 pages a day (20 pages a week?) for an entire year or more. Even JB recently mentioning he was doing 3 pages a day isn't something most pencilers are doing these days. Three pages a day or 15 pages a week is three comic books a month! Does anyone know the last time an artist was on multiple monthly books at the same time? A page a day seems to be the standard today.
Question for JB: How many pages were you able to complete in a day or week when you were pencilling and inking the FF?

Although I later acquired older issues, X-Men #129 is the first comic by JB that I ever read. (Came in a comic 3-pack with #136 and another comic I don't remember but was probably either Marvel Tales or Amazing Spider-Man.)
