Eric, I believe so, as some of the scans I saw
online, like a couple of the ones above, are too
clean to have been scanned from a comic book on
newsprint.

Dr. Droom / Dr. Druid. I may snicker, but who knows, he might become the next MCU star.

Roger Stern was responsible for the biggest change/fix on Doctor Droom. When Rog was reprint editor he decided to use Droom’s stories as basically filler in some of the monster titles. He ran into a big roadblock right away. In his origin, Droom, a caucasian, travels to the Far East to learn the mystic arts, and in the final phase of his education he——becomes Chinese! “My eyes! They’re becoming slanted!”

Taking advantage of Droom’s pose in that panel, Roger had the dialog relettered as “My mind! It’s as if I’ve been asleep all my life!”

He also got rid of the chrome yellow skin.

Crazy to think those old stories were in no way considered racist in their day. They actually showed a RESPECT for Asian cultures, which were shown as superior to ours. Times change!

 QUOTE:
Man, that Kirby art is phenomenal! Is there a book that collected the original Dr Droom stories?

They're also included in the Amazing Fantasy Omnibus. Marvel's about to issue a new printing of that one (6/24 per their recent announcement) so it might be a cheaper option than the Rarities Masterworks depending on your interest in the non-Droom material included. The AF Omni also includes a half-dozen Kirby monster stories and a lot of Ditko.

Sorry, Matt and Dave, I'm late in thanking you for pointing me in the right direction! Thanks!

I have some of these, some great reprints, like that issue (#22) has a fantastic short Joe Kubert comic at the back! Others I have for the Bill Everett Venus more than anything else. I think the way Kirby did old bearded guys is a bit Byrne-like (well, I should say vice-versa of course).

There is a weird humorous little death of Dr. Druid spot illo on the letter's page in that issue too... but I detect maybe Marie Severin or Tom Sutton?
