Roger Stern was responsible for the biggest change/fix on Doctor Droom. When Rog was reprint editor he decided to use Droom’s stories as basically filler in some of the monster titles. He ran into a big roadblock right away. In his origin, Droom, a caucasian, travels to the Far East to learn the mystic arts, and in the final phase of his education he——becomes Chinese! “My eyes! They’re becoming slanted!”Taking advantage of Droom’s pose in that panel, Roger had the dialog relettered as “My mind! It’s as if I’ve been asleep all my life!” He also got rid of the chrome yellow skin. Crazy to think those old stories were in no way considered racist in their day. They actually showed a RESPECT for Asian cultures, which were shown as superior to ours. Times change!
