One item on my reading schedule for April is JB's run on Wonder Woman now that I have all three of the recent hardback collections.

Now, I did read most of this back in the day in comic form but I'm afraid that (sorry JB) I really don't remember anything about it. Can any of you guys who are more familiar with it name your favourite bits?

No spoilers please but if you have any favourite issues, moments, characters, story arcs, villains then I'd love to know so I can see if they match with mine as I read through.

JB, not sure how much you enjoyed your run on WW but if you do have any bits you were pleased with, I'd love to hear about them.

Leigh,

My recommends:

Issues 101 - 104 - "Second Genesis" - Sets up the new status quo in Gateway City, introduces Mike Schorr, debuts revised costume, and has WW go up against Darkseid.

105 - 108 - "Lifelines"  - Fun story that pits WW against Morgaine Le Fay and guest stars The Demon, Arion and the Phantom Stranger.

109 - 112 -  "LEVEL" - Won't say too much about it but WW faces an evil Barry Allen, Sinestro and Doomsday with a couple of surprise debuts.

118 - 127 - WW goes up against the Cheetah, Issue 120 celebrates 10 years since the George Perez revamp, and it leads in to status quo changing event involving characters from the beginning of the title.

130 - 133 - Won't say too much. It involves WW in World War 2 teaming with the JSA

136 - The wrap up to the whole run, and groundwork being laid for the future.

I've pretty much recommended the whole run bar 9 issues.

It took me longer to "find" Wonder Woman than any other character on which I have worked. Put it down to "performance anxiety". It had been a while since George Perez had rebooted the character, but I still felt as if I was stepping into his shadow.

Plus, I started out with idiots on the interweb declaring this would just be "left over She-Hulk stories". It really depresses me when I realize how many "readers" cannot conceive of anyone creating anything they could not themselves.

I did have some fun, tho. All that Greek stuff was a hoot to draw.

Yeah, every storyline was fun.
I will say I get extra geeked if a "Golden Age" character is involved!

I really enjoyed those issues with the JSA.

I absolutely loved this run! Second to the Perez revamp, sure. It was while reading this I heard people talking about Byrne's "old stuff" and I said "This stuff is better!"

Lots of experimental art. The writing is superb!

The stories get better and better throughout the run — and I LOVED the art! This is one of my favorite pieces from my JB collection —

I don’t remember when exactly the “old stuff” meme got started, but I noticed quite early on that “old stuff” basically translated as “anything before what he’s working on now.”

I think what made Wonder Woman Vol 2. a strong book for so long was that in it's first 12 years of publication it only had 3 writers: George Perez (with scripting being done by Greg Potter on issues 1 - 2, and Len Wein on issues 3 - 16), William Messner-Loebs and John Byrne.

Each with their own take, but a consistency with what had gone before.

An added bonus in this period was the Brian Bollland covers during the Messner-Loebs run.

The great tragedy of the Messner-Loebs run: excellent stories ruined by Mike Deodato's soft-porn artwork. Diana wore what was basically a thong through most of that run. (Comics Code? What Comics Code?)

Have to be honest, I wasn't a big fan of the first few issues. Felt the run got more into its stride later on, for example the stories with Wonder Woman fighting the Flash/Sinestro/Doomsday and the involvement of a new Wonder Girl and the mysterious Champion.
