JLGL did a 3 part mini series with Howard Chaykin in 1990 called "Twilight" that focused on the 50s / 60s DC space heroes. As well as having a great story, the art is gorgeous.

Well worth checking out.

••

But only for the art.

As a mostly Marvel fan did not become aware of JLGL until I bought Batman/Hulk cross-over. I remember thinking "who is this guy?" and wishing he was a Marvel artist.

I discovered him through the same glorious gateway as Greg; those Superman and DC Comics Presents issues. All his stuff is pretty great.

JLGL was at a convention a couple years back. I bought a little sketchbook he was selling for $5 I think, which he signed for free. I remember thinking how the "big media stars" on the other side of the building were charging $60 or more just for an autograph. And the poor, ignorant attendees who spend all their money in the wrong places...

Regarding the question of is anyone else a fan of JLGL, the answer for me is: of course!

I think the first time I noticed his art (though I wouldn't have known the name then) would have been the licensed artwork for the Super Powers toyline in the 1980s. I would guess the year was 1986 and I was a 100% Marvel boy at the time.I went up to the toy section in my local Martin's (anyone remember those?? Would eventually become a John Menzies. Remember those?) and there were some DC Super Powers figures that I cast my eye over. One in particular I coveted was Green Lantern. What a costume! And the art on the pack seemed to incorporate everything I liked about Marvel. It was such a recognisable style. It seemed to hold a promise of a world I was missing at DC. I didn't act on it, though. As I said, I was a 100% Marvel boy then, which wouldn't change for a couple of years.

But I would occasionally come across the instantly recognisable style of that artwork in subsequent years and always admired it. At some point, the name Garcia-Lopez filtered into my consciousness. I'm not sure I even own a comic with the interior drawn by him! And probably just a few with covers by him. It's the images that I've seen online from the DC comics style guide that blow me away. Would love to have a printed copy.

Edited to correct a couple of typos and to clarify a point.

One of the reasons I (again) stopped doing cons was that I grew tired of catching flak from fellow pros who objected to my not charging for autographs. Glad to hear JLGL also doesn't charge.

García-López is an amazing artist. Every single character
in the DC Comics Style Guide looks exactly
like they should ideally look.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to meet Mr García-López at a convention. Wonderful guy. He didn't charge for any signatures or the photo we took. I was a lucky one of two who won a raffle for getting a sketch that day. I remember that day fondly.

Your right Steven lots of people were oblivious.

He did.

How anyone could make this costume look good is a miracle.

Been following his work since the late '70's.

Easily in my Mount Rushmore of  favorite DC artists.

Especially loved his Deadman mini series.
