I didnít watch DALLAS, but I figured out who shot JR from reading the weekly synopsis in TV GUIDE.

I recall back then after the reveal was done, they showed a reel where we saw all of the other suspects each pulling the trigger.  They even had a take with Hagman himself shooting.

Edited to correct spelling.

When Larry Hagman died during production of the DALLAS remake, they concocted "Who Killed J.R.?" , with the resolution being quite clever, IMO:

INVISO TEXT (Click or highlight to reveal):
J.R. discovered that he had a terminal illness, so he hired someone to shoot him dead and frame longtime nemesis Cliff Barnes for his murder. As Bobby said at the revelation - "The only person that could kill J.R. is.....J.R."

Regarding that last spoiler:

INVISO TEXT (Click or highlight to reveal):
Wasn't Bobby also in on it, rather than finding out after the fact?

I was 8, going on 9 (my birthday is next month), and was the only one in my family who figured out who the shooter was. As I seem to recall, everyone else thought it was either his father or his wife.

And even though I liked I DREAM OF JEANIE, Larry Hagman was DALLAS. J.R. Ewing is the role he was born to play. Cannot see anyone else in that role, and he was so perfect it was scary.

People now don't realize how big this thing was.  I was 13 when it came down, so the prime age for this type of serial storytelling. We had the t-shirts, we discussed who it could be and why and everyone tuned in to watch the reveal at the start of the next season.  I mean literally EVERYONE.  It was when broadcast television was king.  We'll never have anything approaching that now.

I absolutely could have cared less when this was going on. Night time soaps were like Kryptonite to me and I stayed far away from them.
But that cliffhanger phenomenon  was unavoidable to hear about, the nightly news was all over it, and I saw those t-shirts around and about.

Do I remember that maybe it aired in England first and people were finding out ahead of time over here?

When teenage boys -- like me at that point -- stopped
thinking even for a minute about girls to speculate about
who killed JR? -- yes, that was a BIG deal!

DALLAS was the only night time soap I watched. Couldn't have cared less about DYNASTY, FALCON CREST, or any of the others. I watched, at most, 3 episodes of KNOTS LANDING, but only because it was a DALLAS spin-off.

40 years!?!? I was only 9 when JR got shot, so I can be forgiven for not remembering WHO shot him!

I was only 5 at the time, so I have no real memories of this, other than people talking about it.

That said, I sure do remember the "Who Shot Mr. Burns" event!
