A Very Strange Review

Misses the point in order to love the first one, then misses the point in order to hate the second. Hmmm

Oh—prepare to be insulted. Literally.

Wow, you weren't kidding about being insulted. LOL That
scene with the Waynes is one of my favorites. Very
powerful.

Did I read the same series as this barely literate blogger?

Look at the date on this - we can't use Covid-19 as an excuse for this stupidity.

GENERATIONS is possible my favorite John Byrne project which I re-read regularly.  I have more favorite stories and moments etc in other John Bryne comics, but as a project as a whole GENERATIONS is tops, in my opinion.

Maybe when XMEN ELSEWHEN is finished, we might see a fanfic continuation in the GENERATIONS universe.  Oh, that would be wonderful.  There's got to be an Invaders/JSA or Avengers/JLA story never told in there somewhere....

I only skimmed the review because I just ate, and I wanted to keep everything stable.

All I have to say is - I wish I had such piercing insight to know about EVERY imaginary story/What If/Elseworlds* story and concept and exactly how every alternate story MUST go.**

But I don't have that type of Buddhic comprehension, so I read imaginary stories*** and enjoy different writers' ideas. Mr. Byrne took one imaginary element (Superman and Batman age in real time) and logically extrapolated ONE possible future. It happens he made it tremendously exciting and beautiful in its execution. But it was also done in several Superman stories in the 60s, where the Man of Steel ages, marries, has children, and then time continues to show results.

Now that everyone has free access to post what they will, any type of silliness can hit the airwaves (as such.) Everyone is entitled to their own damn silly opinions... me included, naturally.

*Oops, I associated Elseworlds with an imaginary story. Shame on me...
**Example: "The Death of Superman" posits Superman's death at the hands of Lex Luthor by green Kryptonite. Alternative 1 - knowing that Superman MUST survie, the Legion of Super Heroes returns in time and manages to revive him. Alternative 2 - Supergirl uses a piece of red K that transfers life force from one Kryptonian to another, and Superman lives while Supergirl dies. Alternative 3 - Supergirl, having lost her cousin in addition to her home city, snaps, and becomes a murderous vigilante, killing Luthor, destroying Brainiac, and mercilessly avenging her cousin with a death sentence for EVERY crime.
***Imaginary stories with IMAGINARY characters, mind you... so their futures are extrapolations ANYHOW. Sheesh...

I missed GENERATIONS as it came out when, to paraphrase Ross, ‘we
were on a break’.
I really wish it would get released on digital.

So did DC. Despite “An Imaginary Story” being part of the LOGO, they still put the ElseWorlds bullet on the cover AND referenced one of my stories in that wretched “Crosstime” debacle.

Some times they just can’t win for losing.

I already hated the Legion for the way they treated Superboy in their introductory story, and seeing them standing in line to “pay respects” to the fallen Superman (in 149) made me want to scream ”YOU BASTARDS! YOU KNEW THIS WAS COMING!”

(Altho I’m not sure I knew the word “bastard” when I was 10.)

Wow, what a jerk.

I guess I must be immoral and in general a horrible person. I liked the Waynes' sacrifice story so much I bought a page of the original art.

The Wayne's sacrifice was and remains a perfect "Imaginary Tale."

Speaking as a parent, it's as noble and aspirational a tale as I can think of for parents. What we go through for our kids is well represented by this story, metaphorically, there are a lot of hidden sacrifices that we can only hope will pay off one day after it's long beyond our control.

What is the "moral" alternative? Maybe the story should have had the Waynes say "Wow, Jonathon! Thanks for the heads up! Batman sounds cool, but we have our whole lives ahead of us. We need little Bruce to understand the #1 rule is: always look out for yourself and never mind the consequences!"
