The character of Superman is a powerful one, and so
difficult to challenge ( one of the reasons I believe
JB downplayed his powers ).
This said, he represents hope, optimism in a world
which is bleak.
When I think of Batman, I mainly imagine scenes in a
rainy night in the dirty and corrupted streets of
Gotham. When I think of Superman, I mainly imagine the
sunny sky of metropolis. Right there, you have 2
obvious contrasts of settings and yet Snyder didn't
thought of using this to establish the differences of
the characters.
All the characters were in the same mold, bleak, sad,
desaturated, from backgrounds and scenery to costumes.

If you look at the Christopher Reeve's Superman,
colors are vivid, full of life everywhere, excepted
when the intentions of the story are to show a
specific story point. For example, the dirty bad
Superman costume from Superman 3. Now look at the
costumes we got since then for the character supposed
to be the symbol of hope...
