I really liked the wealth of documentary film/TV that came
out during the Apollo 11 anniversary in the last year. A
reminder for how bold and risky a mission it really was -
it's burned in our memory as a success, but the chance they
wouldn't return was much more than I knew.

I had a friend at university who assured me with great
authority that Buzz Aldrin had gone mad...

Happy birthday to Dr Rendezvous.

I can't even imagine living until 90, but I wonder how
far I'll get (I'm hoping for at least 75).

More than anything, I like the role model guys like Buzz provide(d) - even if it was exaggerated for effect at times. The Mercury and Apollo astronauts epitomised a great blend of courage, skill, persistence and intellect.

I was thinking the other day about Apollo 8 for example. That would have been a horrendous mission: three men crammed for a week into a tiny capsule, and various risks aside, one of them - not sure how to put this nicely - filled the capsule with bits of vomitus and faeces... Jim Lovell later described the stench, and I can just imagine!

That’s maybe the least appealing thing about space travel, the sealed container. Nowhere for anything to go.

Imagine a Mars flight after three months!
