I've been thinking long and hard about this, and have come up with this idea:

If another team gets caught doing this, go full-on scorched Earth: Entire team is suspended for one year, except the manager and coaches, who are fired AND suspended. Any potential Hall of Famers on the team get an additional punishment: Must be retired six years rather than five for eligibility. The next season the team must be made up entirely of players from the farm system. If they've acquired any new players before being caught, those players' contracts are null and void, as are the contracts of any players who have moved to a new team.

Exception: If the Dodgers do this to the Astros or Red Sox, nothing whatsoever happens.

Whoa, Brian!
Talk about a "Death Sentence" :-)

Doug, my reasoning is that it would give other teams a second thought about cheating like that again. What the commissioner has done so far is laugable and won't deter anyone.

And its not really a death sentence as much as it is making sure the team absolutely stinks for a season.

I like the way you are thinking, Brian!

As a Dodgers fan, I have been angry about this since it broke. It is good to see
it's not just team devotion that has other people speaking out. MLB players
are making themselves heard, and fans across the country are calling the
penalty out for what it really is - complete bullshit. This is an affront to the
fairness that is essential to good sportsmanship.

I predict MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred will resign before the season begins.
or soon after the season begins. His successor will then go to the Players
Union and re-assess punishing players.

Meanwhile, I enjoyed some good Dodgers Spring Training games this past
weekend - great to see the team back on the field.

You pull a “death penalty” move and you hurt the STH, potentially hurt
the progress of prospects, and the MLBPA would never let it happen.

As as I said, its not a death sentence. It just punishes everyone involved and makes those players sit out a year. Once that year is over, the farm team players go back to the farms (unless they've performed well enough to keep their spot) and the players go back to work.

I'm torn on the Red Sox part of it, because they're my favorite AL team (second favorite is whoever is playing the Yankees), but my parents are both Dodgers fans. (My favorite NL team is the Reds...and my choices of teams is weird because my favorite color is blue.)

Question here, since I actually hadn’t thought about it previously...were
there any MLB rules that were violated? Would punishments fall under
violating ethics/morality clauses?

No rules against sign stealing, but keep it on the ball field. Electronic sign stealing crosses that unwritten line. Look for some rules coming soon.

As for punishment, besides fining the team, which hurts the owners, go after the legacy. Take away pennants and championships, that will hurt the player. After all they cheated to win that's what was coveted the most.

Astros have already been hit by pitches at least 7 times in spring training. Definitely intentional, as the pitchers have been aiming where it will leave them sore rather than seriously hurt.

In other words, its going to be a looong season for those dirty bastards. :-)

In regards to the Astros players getting hit, I hope only those who were actually ON the team during the cheating years are getting plunked.

Same here.

Hopefully Altuve and Springer get drilled the most, since they won MVP awards while the team was cheating.

Yankees fan here. I grew to hate the Astros all season but especially during the playoffs. Glad the Yanks got Cole from them.
