Pretty measured essay...

...tho it does perpetuate the myth that DC offered me a "million dollars" to do Superman. No such luck. Did it for my page rate and whatever royalties might acrue (which were very nice, but nowhere near a million dollars).*

------------------

*The books were still 75¢ in those days! On the 900,000 sales of MAN OF STEEL 1, royalties were paid after the first 100,000. Five percent divided between the writer, penciler and inker. 4% for me, in other words. So... a bit over $40,000 for that first issue.

Orders dropped, of course, after the first issue, so the book finally settled in at around 200,000. Still at 75¢. About what I was getting on FF, in other words.

Not chicken feed, by any means, but not the fantasy numbers some people love to conjure.

I have always wondered this. Was Next Men your most
lucrative book? I recall that book breaking sales records
for B&W comics. At the time, I imagined Dark Horse must
have bent over backwards to convince you to work with them
(although I know now money isn't always your main
consideration).

NEXT MEN did well for me because I own it.

It wasn’t B&W tho.

I had to go check, and the Dark Horse Presents issues, with the Next Men, were published in black and white.  I had forgotten.

Do you think that’s what Wilson was asking about?

I thought he might be talking about the first appearances of them.

Not sure of where else I'd post this question, but they're currently using the MAN OF STEEL #1 cover for one of their Warner Brothers credit cards:

Does DC pay royalties for usage like that?

Don't forget this.

Ever think living in Canada back in the 70s that you would one day have a postage stamp with your work on it?

The USPS was quicker on the draw. They did a series of superhero stamps (15 years ago?) and for some odd reason chose a drawing of mine from AVENGERS WEST COAST to represent Iron Man.

This was a very nice article. Your work on the FF is what really got me hooked into reading comics and remains my favorite era of the title.
