Starting this off with a spoiler warning because it's released on Netflix as a binge series...

Not much of a fan of fantasy and never read the books upon which this series is based, but I come to it by way of the video game.  WITCHER 3 was a fantastic open world role playing game that immersed me in the world even though I hadn't played the first two games at all.  That game is fairly far ahead of where the new Netflix series starts, but it was enough to help me feel established in at least some of the logistics of the world.  So that's where I come from...

All that said, I think this is a fantastic series.  I took a minute to realize that the parallel stories taking place weren't in the same time, but once that was revealed it was a roller coaster.  There are episodes that feel like "monster of the week" that are also coupled with segments that advance the story.  Henry Cavill is pitch perfect as "Gerait of Rivia" so much so that he leaps from the video game to the screen.  I can't imagine anyone better to fill the role.  The supporting characters are also fantastic, many of which are getting their first exposure with this project.  The design is phenomenal and the sound is immersive.  Having just purchased Dolby Atmos speakers, I can attest to the sound design.  In native 4k, which this is presented, it's spectacular.

It's only 8 hour+ episodes that you can binge at your leisure (we did it over roughly two days) and it's well worth it.  Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

Interesting review, Matt. I watched a trailer a while back, and I must say there was absolutely nothing that called out to me, and I AM a fan of fantasy.

There is a book series that both the games and Netflix
series is based on JB, though I've not read it. Like
Matt, it took me a bit to figure out the time-frame
jumping (in my case, three episodes before the light
bulb winked on), and I loved that the writers didn't
hold your hand with constant "30 years ago" and "10
years later" (or whatever, I just used random numbers)
captions.

It does seem to be the new narrative tool of choice.

A bit like flash forwarding was a few years ago.

My wife is a much bigger fan of the games than I am, but I dug this.  Its sort of a cross between Conan and the original Grimm Fairy Tales.

So, WESTWORLD.....

Not a twist like in Westworld because you understand this very soon. It's Trevor said it's a way to tell the story without making flashbacks.

I found this fun to watch. A little bit confusing at the beginning when you're used to the video games versions of characters but I got used to it and I liked it.

If any part of the timeline is set in the future, what comes before is by definition a "flashback". It's all a matter of which point you take as "now".

Thanks for the recommendation, Matt. My wife goes out of town this week, so this moves onto my watch list.

So looking for the second season.
