Around the time of Alpha Flight #4, JRJr was finishing his Spider-Man run, and starting on Uncanny X-Men.

I know what JRjr was doing. I just don't know what Romita Sr. was doing at that time.

Wikipedia doesn't list him as having penciled or inked any Marvel comics in the early '80s except AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #238. (Introduction of the Hobgoblin, I think.) And THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN SPECIAL EDITION, whatever that was.

(I forgot another great Marvel artist from the early '80s -- Paul Smith. Still hard to believe he did such little work there -- his runs on X-MEN and DOCTOR STRANGE, and that's it!)

Romita had even quit drawing the Spider-man newspaper strip by that point.

I think we was probably concentrating on art for merchandise and his duties as art director by that point.

That all said, Romita was a fantastic artist.  He, Kurt Schaffenberger and Gil Kane are my favorites from the 1960's.

Along with JB, the artists/books from that period that stick with me are Layton's Iron Man,Sienkiewicz on Moon Knight, MIller & Janson's DD and Buscema's Conan. Throw in the odd run from Paul Smith or fill in from Barry Windsor-Smith, and IMO it was a good time for artists to show their stuff.

Shame that the paper quality throughout much of this time didn't do their work justice.

Oh Craig, the 80's was THE era for me!!  I had been sort of collecting comics since I was 9 in 1980, but my collecting really went into high gear at that point.

THE comic that got me into buying on a monthly basis was DC COMICS PRESENTS #26 - solely because of the NEW TEEN TITANS preview insert.  I had read a very few TEEN TITANS comics before that, but loved the whole sidekicks forming a "club" of their own concept.  When I saw  house-advertisement for the NEW Teen Titans preview in DCCP #26, I knew I had to have it.  I haven't looked back since.

The 80's was not only "my" era, it was also filled with some modern classics:

JB's Fantastic Four
JB's Alpha Flight
Wolfman and Perez's New Teen Titans
Levitz and Giffen's Legion of Super-Heroes
Miller's Daredevil
Simonson's Thor
Clarement and Smith's Uncanny X-Men
JB's Superman titles
Perez's Wonder Woman
... I just KNOW I am forgetting some, but you remember, you were there!

Marc

I'm with you, Marc. Incidentally, I thought that this was a weak time for two Marvel heavyweights in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk books (at least, in a strictly artistic sense).

I know that JRjr started on Spidey at this time, but I thought it took him a couple of years to get into the groove (for me, he peaked on The Punisher)

It's just down to personal taste. I was a huge fan of Ross Andru's ASM
