I can accept a maker like Aston Martin delving into the SUV market. They are a fine sports car brand, but there is room for them to expand and keep pace with Jaguar, Porsche and the like.
As a Ferrari fan however, it’s going to take an effort for me to accept the upcoming Purosangue (their SUV entry). I just don’t want to wrap my head around it. It would have to LOOK like an absolute dream...and of course go like hell. I await its debut in another year or so. Maybe I’ll be surprised.
I am a bit dismayed that makers like Ford and GM are taking big steps to literally eliminate passenger cars (sedans explicitly) from their line in favor of cross-over vehicles....and trucks. And the new Ford Mustang Mach-E is just a marketing exercise gone all wrong. Call it anything but a Mustang. Even keep the semi-Mustang styling cues....but call it something else. And for God sake...no running pony emblem ANYWHERE on it.
I have a feeling that by the time I am ready to get another new vehicle my choices will be rather limited. I DO NOT want to regularly drive an SUV, smallish or otherwise. Nor do I want a truck. I’d consider an EV...but all electric vehicles I’d love to own are out of my price range at the moment.
So I’m hoping to God that ol’ Dodge finds it in their heart to keep the all mighty Challenger (my current car) around for awhile longer. It’s a dinosaur in terms of it’s ‘green’ profile...and it gets lousy gas mileage. And the neighbors dead relatives wake up when it starts in the morning (sorry). But it’s got a warp speed pedal that makes me smile like a lunatic. And I still get random thumbs up from those who appreciate it.
But its clear the clock is ticking on that kind of old school automotive attraction. I’m just hoping for a few more years to enjoy what I think is the true joy of driving.
