For most modern Americans - actually for most in any era - save historians or collectors, fifty-odd years ago is before functional memory. I doubt that there is any recollection of the shuttle disasters, and if we don't keep mentioning it, 9/11 will go the way of the Holocaust as far as modern memory.
But how do we make it interesting enough to be included into someone's life to recall? There are far too many Americans who can't read or write or do simple math... how does History get put into it? And History has a head start... it's much more interesting to watch on a TV program.
