I saw the Jim Henson exhibit last year, and it was a joy to
see the Ernie and Count Von Count Muppets up close. Sesame
Street had a huge impact on me - I was born just as it was
getting started, so it really defined TV for my young self.

NPR's Weekend Edition did a piece on the show, and they
played Cookie Monster's "C is for Cookie," and the lyrics
struck me as genuinely funny after all these years:

"Now what starts with the letter C?
Cookie starts with C
Let's think of other things
That starts with C
Oh, who cares about the other things?

C is for cookie, that's good enough for me..."

The formula still works - come for the Muppets, stay for
the lesson!

Sesame Street is justly remembered for Jim Henson & Co.'s incredible contributions. But so much else in the show was spectacular too. For me, in particular, the animated shorts were (and remain!) amazing.

My mother claims that I learned to read by watching Sesame Street. How much truth that contains, I can't really say but it does remind one about the educational value that show has.
