Netflix has a new documentary called Spitfire, but the movie was made in 2018. I watched it this morning and found it to be very good viewing. I knew there were various versions of the plane, but had no idea there were so many. I found the interviews with RAF and German pilots from WWII particularly interesting. I recommend it to everyone.

Ok. Just finished it.

Just lovely.  The Spitfire is a gorgeous piece of kit.  And deadly as well.

However....Id say the North American P-51D Mustang is THE most beautiful fighter of WW2.

The two together make for a kick ass aviation beauty pageant.

Ill join you to praise the Mustang, but the Spit wins on an almost lyrical level. No other plane I know of looks so fast and graceful when its just standing still!

Id refuse to debate it.  Both make my eyes get all dreamy in Tex Avery fashion.

But neither are my favorite WW2 warbirds.  Im a die hard, drop dead fan of the Vought F4U Corsair!   That thing just makes my heart, brain and soul get all weird!  Its far from pretty.  But it looks like it was born to unleash hell.

Same for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.  If the Hulk was an airplane....

I've always had a fascination for any kind of miniatures, so those are beautiful and fascinating to look at (plus I used to buy the occaisional Air Classics magazine), but having read Namor #12 so recently I was a little disappointed this wasn't about the Invaders character!

I always thought the P-38 Lightning was the coolest looking (but then again, I thought the Gremlin was a cool looking car).

What a gorgeous and engaging film.

I particularly liked the parts about the women of the ATA (Air Transport Auxilliary) who flew the planes from the factories to put them into serivce at the airfields.   You could base an entire motion picture about that relatively unknown aspect of the British war effort.

Sadly, Mary Ellis whose signature now twice graces a Spitfire passed away last year...
