Y'know, I'd probably just shrug it off if they chose to never reference that scene or even if they undid it, but to outright LIE and say that it depicted Reed "eyeing a twelve-year old girl"?

Another reason to dislike Tom Brevoort (he has given us many).

 QUOTE:
There's nothing wrong at all with a ten-year age gap. I don't even think there's anything necessarily wrong about dating a woman you first met when she was 12 and you were in your 20s, but it's still a weird visual.

JB explicitly says Reed was a college freshman. When I started college, I was still 17.

And that Fraction run? Utter garbage, one of the best signs that Marvel had lost their way with the Fantastic Four. Bagley's art was nice at least.

In the back of my mind I was thinking Reed was a freshman at, like, his fifth or sixth college. (Or fifteenth. He probably started when HE was 12.)

As the article notes, Stan himself established a roughly ten year age gap between Reed and Sue. That presented some puzzlng math, to have them be the right (apparent) ages for FF1.

Well, according to some theory that wasn't even Reed! That was Johnny's father!

The 10 year gap isn't so easy to play with. If Reed and Ben were at Guadalcanal in August of 1942, and they'd just graduated, they would've met in 1938. Typical if Reed and Ben were 22 in '42, so the girl Reed left behind was... 12? Or, using JB's met-at-12 figure, Sue would've been 16 and Reed 22 when he went to war.

Except, of course, the War has been deleted from Reed and Ben’s backstories (except in particularly mini-minds).

Reed and Sue were not the May/December (or whatever it would be) romances Stan wrote, either. He had Xavier pining for Jean (which might not have been so “bad” if he’d still been in his early 20s, as established in X-MEN1), and Roger Stern did the math and calculated Janet van Dyne was 16(!) when she made her first appearance.

In the end, of course, it’s eye of the beholder stuff. And if those eyes are attached to dirty minds.........

Way too many mini- and dirty-minds over the years.

Did it ever occur to anyone that, being the big brain he
is, Reed was a college freshman at 15- 16 years old?

And I never saw that picture as Reed "eyeing" 12-year-old
Sue. It looked to me as if he noticed her eyeing him and
was bashful and awkward about it.

Yeah, but that only works if you read body-language (a lost art in today's comics) as intended.
