Robin Williams daughter captures the ghoulishness of it perfectly.

Expect to see more of this as technology will eventually reach the point where CG humans can be done flawlessly.

I'm guessing this digital grave robbing will soon be Hollywood's next shiny new toy.

I seem to recall a commercial from the 1990s, or so, that used footage of John Wayne which was edited to make him appear in new footage.  And there's that CGI Peter Cushing that appeared in STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE, as well as Marlon Brando in SUPERMAN RETURNS. It is  sort of a perverse practice.

I wonder if there's a legally binding way for actors to prevent their likeness from being used in this manner once they have passed? The producers of that upcoming film claimed they couldn't think of a better actor for the role than James Dean,  but if course that's BS, as the CGI version is not actually the actor, and CGI cannot "act."

Maybe they’ll get Andy Serkis to do the “acting”.

Who is doing the voice? Will it be computer generated based on words he spoke in his films?

Imagine you are a young actor just starting out. You go to an audition call and as you find a seat to wait your turn, you recognize, among your competitors, one or more of of these famous actors: Aaliyah, Andre The Giant, Bettie Page, Burt Reynolds, Christopher Reeve, Ingrid Bergman, Jack Lemmon, James Dean, Jean Harlow, Princess Of Beverly Hills, Waffles The Cat, Bette Davis, David Carradine, David Niven, Donald O'Connor, Fred Dryer, Hedy Lamarr, Jane Russell, Jayne Mansfield, Jimmy Stewart, Mickey Rooney, Milton Berle, Montgomery Clift, Natalie Wood, Peter Sellers, Rock Hudson, Sal Mineo, Sir Laurence Olivier, Alan Freed, Alan Ladd, Art Carney, Bob Crane, Bridget Marquardt, Buddy Ebsen, Dave Dugan, Don Adams, Dorothy Lamour, Dudley Moore, Flip Wilson, Ginger Rogers, Helen Hayes, James Coburn, Johnny Weissmuller, Josephine Baker, Lana Turner, Lillian Gish, Mario Lanza, Matthew "Stymie" Beard, Jr., Nicholas Brothers, Redd Foxx, Robert Culp, Robert Newton, Vikki Lamotta, Virginia Mayo, Will Rogers or William "Buckwheat" Thomas. And you wonder, "Are they working at scale?"

The above is a partial client list of a single agency.

Acting is as much a creative endeavor as writing, directing or drawing. So I only wish this movie was directed by John Ford, written by Ben Hecht, shot by Gregg Toland and edited by Dede Allen.

I mentioned this in the CGI movies thread, and it's this inevitable, and unstoppable. Hollywood used to police itself at one stage, but now It's a bunch of often very greedy and totally uncaring business people who will do anything for a buck.

As for what Dean thinks, I imagine he doesn't care. It's more what his loved ones and people who admire him think. And if they sold the rights to his image to someone else (which they obviously did at some stage), then they need to wear the fact that they are partly responsible for this.

There are times that this might be justifiable, such as Grand Moff Tarkin (which was awful by the way, just in case anyone thinks differently).

But this is just rediculous - this isn't Dean acting in a pre-established role where the motives, nuances etc have already been established, this will be completely at the behest of the director and animator.

Easiest way to kill this would be to not see it. Yeah, that'll work.

Why not just get James Franco to portray Dean again if they had to go down this route.
