I’ve noted before, with only minimal snark, that when Chris is lauded for his long tenure on X-MEN, it should be considered that he really didn’t write the same book, or even the same characters, for very long at a time.

Chris never did understand what a mutant is—and largely thanks to him, most readers don’t either.
Chuck Austen was writing this. Not Chris Claremont.
I never followed any X-Men series again after reading his work. She-Hulk sleeping with Juggernaut was the end for me.

Chris wanted to reveal that Nightmare was Nightcrawler’s father, before Mystique caught his eye. From there to a demon seems not much of a trip.

The whole concept of the Marvel Mutant was crumbling fast by the time I came to the X-Men. Stan's original idea that each mutant would have AN "extra ability" had taken a hard blow from Nightcrawler, who not only had multiple abilities, but seemed to develop a new one every time the story needed it.The basic notion was simple enough: two parts produce a third. The offspring of two "normal" people will have some power that is not normal. (Namor confused some people, as they could not grasp that it was his ability to fly that made him a mutant, not that his parents were of different species.) When I was working on FANTASTIC FOUR I would occasionally get mail from (younger?) readers who referred to the FF as "mutants". I blamed Chris for that blurring of the borders, especially since Roy Thomas had established a term with which to refer to the likes of the FF, Spider-Man, the Hulk, and all those who had been transformed in some way (usually by radiation). They were "non-mutant variants". Sauron was the first be be described as such, as I recall.

I can imagine a bad guy using a special machine to suppress Namor's mutant powers, and being unpleasantly surprised when the Sub-Mariner goes on to fight with his enormous strength unchecked!

I can imagine a bad guy using a special machine to suppress Namor's mutant powers, and being unpleasantly surprised when the Sub-Mariner goes on to fight with his enormous strength unchecked!•• Wish I'd thought of that!!

This is so much better than the Project: Wideawake that slipped into an issue of NEW MUTANTS virtually unnoticed.
