I'm surprised nothing's come up here about his death, aged 80.

As a human being he was...not a nice person. To put it mildly. But he was a superb drummer. He brought his jazz "chops" to blues-rock and music hasn't been the same since.

Without Baker and the rest of Cream there would be no hard rock, no heavy metal, none of it.

Good bye you cantankerous old brilliant bastard.

Yes, amazing drummer, from The Graham Bond Organization onward. There's a great film from the '70s where he travels to Africa and meets various fellow drum masters there.

I saw him playing live with Hawkwind on the Levitation
tour in 1980.

As huge a fan I am of Clapton, Iíve never really cared for Bakerís drumming. I can appreciate his place in rock history, but just donít care for his work. And I canít really explain why. He was certainly different from all his contemporaries and you could tell when he played on a track.

I'll agree with that, also.

Baker was a great rock drummer but a deeply mediocre jazz drummer.  The problem was that he disdained the former genre and deified the latter, which is a recipe for lifelong dissatisfaction.  I've never been much of a Cream fan (I always thought the writing was kind of blah), but Air Force*, Blind Faith, and a little-known trio he had in the 90s called Masters of Reality are a perfect blend of player, style, and material.

*Air Force has a slight problem in that the mixes are TERRRRIBLE, but you can generally focus past them to the meat of the thing.  First album is better than the second.

I have a jazz album that that Baker made with Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell. Baker's playing didn't strike me as mediocre.

Though "White Room" is my favorite Cream song, much of WHEELS OF FIRE is...excessive. The best Cream LPs are the first two, IMO.
