I'm not sure the claustrophobic in me would be happy trading long air travel times for undersea tubes... one tunnel collapse and it's adios tubes and everyone in them!

The good news is that just a few days ago, there was, apparently, a breakthrough in Quantum teleportation, such that "Scientists have successfully teleported a three-dimensional quantum state."

The bad news is that at the moment it's really only applicable to computer data.

Flight is magnificent, but I'm hoping that even if teleportation doesn't eventuate, the future involves something less like buses in the sky!

That's an idea - sub-orbital rocket flights. I think I'd prefer those in the future... Reed had the right idea!

I also remember the first episode of Land of the Giants mentioning that their ship, the Spindrift, was a "sub-orbital transport" in the then-near future of 1983. Here we are almost another 4 decades after that perceived future and we're still crammed into a flying metal tube for 17 hours!

EDIT: At the risk of becoming the king of derailing threads here, just as I check the news a minute after posting the above, I find this article which says that near zero-g conditions will kill cancer cells.

Bring on the sub-orbital transport system!
