Wow.

Week one and we have our first I CALLED IT! award winner.  And I am going to kick it up a notch to an I TOLD YOU SO, because these awards mean nothing and I can do what I want.  So, James Johnson, for being the only person to pick the Packers, enjoy your moment in the sun.  You're fifteen picks away from a perfect Week One!!

The rest of my picks:

Sunday, 9/8

  • Rams at Panthers
  • Titans at Browns
  • Chiefs at Jaguars
  • Ravens at Dolphins
  • Falcons at Vikings
  • Bills at Jets
  • Redskins at Eagles
  • Colts at Chargers - Upset of the week.
  • Bengals at Seahawks
  • Lions at Cardinals
  • Giants at Cowboys
  • 49ers at Buccaneers
  • Steelers at Patriots - I would love to make this the upset of the week, but given how slowly the Steelers start each year, how easily the Patriots own them (I still think they lost last year on purpose), and they fact they are on the road...

Monday, 9/9

  • Texans at Saints
  • Broncos at Raiders

  • Rams at Panthers Donald licking chops at Newton's foot injury
  • Titans at Browns Rooting for Cleve to continue their climb back
  • Chiefs at Jaguars Reid built a good program but can he overcome 2-5 KC playoff record
  • Ravens at Dolphins Two Jekyll and Hydes
  • Falcons at Vikings Atlanta won last 3, Minn lost 4 of last 7
  • Bills at Jets Ugly GOTW
  • Redskins at Eagles Can Wentz stay healthy
  • Colts at Chargers Too much to ask QB with 2 completions in 19 months to beat 12-4 LA on the road
  • Bengals at Seahawks
  • Lions at Cardinals
  • Giants at Cowboys Prescott not worth $40 mill but tries to prove it anyway
  • 49ers at Buccaneers No love for either but last year SF 0-8 on the road, Bucs 4-4@home
  • Steelers at Patriots Sans Gronk era begins with a W

Monday, 9/9

  • Texans at Saints Should be good
  • Broncos at Raiders Shouldn't be

Patriots' signing Brown is certainly fraught with peril but they made it work with Moss in a similar situation 13 years ago (also leaving the Raiders) and Belichick has frequently gotten the most out of misfits and malcontents.  Still AB may be the all-time mother of the category and the odds of this blowing up are easily equal or greater than the dimes-on-the-dollar production best case scenario.  Given his options (his entire guaranteed money voided for "conduct unbecoming the team" and any doubts about his nuts-ness completely eliminated) I'd say Brown did fine winding up on a Superbowl contender and a potential $15 mill with incentives.  At a certain point more money means little and it's arguably a step up from the non-playoff Raiders assuming New England performs.  Similarly, if AD can approximate the performance of his last six seasons, New England got a steal.  So why am I so nervous?

AB is greater than Moss by a long shot in terms of locker room disruption.  I don't think it's even close.  Moss never blew up any guaranteed money let alone $30 mil.

The rest...

Sunday, 9/8
  • Rams at Panthers
  • Titans at Browns
  • Chiefs at Jaguars
  • Ravens at Dolphins
  • Falcons at Vikings
  • Bills at Jets
  • Redskins at Eagles
  • Colts at Chargers - DISAGREE! Although I think the Colts will be just fine without Luck, I don't think they get it together on the road against a really good Chargers squad.
  • Bengals at Seahawks
  • Lions at Cardinals
  • Giants at Cowboys
  • 49ers at Buccaneers - DISAGREE! This is a gut pick.  49ers on the road with a shaky Pats cast-off QB.  People are high on the Niners for some reason.  Have been for a couple of seasons.  I just don't see it.
  • Steelers at Patriots

Monday, 9/9

  • Texans at Saints
  • Broncos at Raiders
A conservative total of two disagrees.  Early in the season.  Still sussing out the teams.  You should have taken the Falcons, Hagerman.  That would have been a for sure disagree!

And to rewind: that Packers/Bears game was atrocious.  Both defenses were good to occasionally great, but the offenses played like they themselves were celebrating the 100th anniversary of the NFL by acting as if they were a 1919 squad.  Awful.  The Bears, particularly, were astoundingly bad.  I don't think I've ever seen a 1st & 40 in my entire life and that's going back well over four decades as a fan.  "Monsters of the Midway" they are not.

Wow.  Rams haven't beaten the Panthers in Carolina since 2001.
