I know for sure that in the finale Chandler says rent control made the apartment "a frickin' steal." But he never mentions the price. And there's that one episode -- my kids just re-watched it the other day, so it's fresh -- where Joey is practicing ballroom dancing with the building's super, and he says that Monica's been illegally subletting the apartment from her grandmother, but again no specific rent figure. I suppose it's a minor quibble, but (being a lawyer, I guess) I'm ever interested in when a seemingly precise detail repeated consistently as if fact actually has no genuine provenance.

One thing of which I’ve grown weary is people grumbling about how HUGE the apartment is. It IS spacious, due to the open floor plan, but the fourth wall (seen in shots from the balcony) is right next to the front door, and reduces the floor space considerably.

This is not Fred and Wilma’s house, where one can run in a straight line for what seems like miles, repeatedly passing the same plant and window.

Joy and Chandler had a good sized apartment themselves, not dramatically smaller than Monica's, it seems.

I lived at one point in a 2-bedroom apartment in the Village in the 80s when I was in college. It was $800/mo, not rent-stabilized. Places there were then like a buck per sq ft. Not nearly the size of Monica's, no, but decent enough for three guys. I moved down to the Financial District by '89 and got another 2 bedroom for $1050/mo -- that was closer in size to Monica's place, something like 1200 sq ft.

After an exhaustive, afternoon-long search, I’m convinced Monica’s amount she paid for rent is never disclosed in an episode of the program.

In the end, almost certainly an apocryphal amount, invented by those who want to get themselves lathered up on this point.

They never mentioned a dollar amount on any episode.

At the risk of thread drift, the question of rent in NYC brings to mind this story that circulated over the weekend

Illegal subdivisions

When I first moved to New York I briefly rented a rather cool apartment that was, in fact, one tall room of an old brownstone mansion. The owner had suspended a “balcony” halfway up one side to create a “bedroom”. James Coburn’s character in THE PRESIDENT’S ANALYST has something similar.

Of course, both of those were quite a bit larger than what I’m imagining from that article!
