This all reminds me of WATCHMEN lifting one of its major plot threads from the OUTER LIMITS episode “The Architects of Fear”—apparently “okay” since one of the characters actually references the source.

Well, comic books, as any subculture forms have always borrowed from higher-brow cultural elements, Greek/Roman mythology or tragedy, Middle Ages myths and legends, "Shakespeare", Dickens, Melville, etc... Once I realized that, I found it was an amusing way to get access to more intellectual culture without doing the real effort...the problem is when the stories adapted/borrowed/plagiarized/callitwantyouwant/ are not taken form so obvious sources...

(The TV miniseries [of SHOGUN] was a marvelous adaptation, wasn't it?)••• I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Great point JB. avengers endgame did this too. By ridiculing the concept of time travel in the movie, it almost forces the audience to forgive its use too.

It's not just Watchmen. The first Alan Moore comic I read opened with a long quote from Bruce Chatwin's IN PATAGONIA; many years later when I read the book I learned not only did Moore borrow the issue's villains from Chatwin, he effectively transcribed the entire chapter describing them.

Moore says he'd never seen the episode. I don't know if the OUTER LIMITS was broadcast in the UK in the '60s, so I don't know whether to believe him or not.
Moore is capable of writing material that doesn't borrow from other sources -- I don't remember his SWAMP THING or MIRACLEMAN runs "ripping off" anything -- so it's very sad when I hear stories like David M's. Was it an early Moore work? Some writers just don't have confidence in their own abilities when they start out, I guess.

The whole premise of Miracleman was a ripoff.

THE OUTER LIMITS was broadcast in the UK during the ‘80’s.It’s possible that the premise might have been even more fresh that first thought.

I really enjoy Alan Moore's mainstream stuff, but, yeah, everything he does is taking something established and twisting it.

It wasn't Moore who'd done the ripoff. It was the guy who created Marvelman (Miracleman's previous name) in the UK as a deliberate copy of Captain Marvel (and the Marvel Family).
Moore just took the ripoff and used it for a very good (if bloody) science fiction story.
