Loved his work, but he also freaked me out for years, since NIGHTHAWKS, BLADE RUNNER and THE HITCHER were the first 3 films I ever remember seeing him in.
RIP

Fine actor who had some truly memorable performances though he never quite broke as big as one might have thought. For me, he'll always be Roy Batty and this is his scene (which Hauer claimed to have written himself.)

Sad news, i loved his movies, especially Blind Fury, which reminded me of Daredevil. I have a concept album by Dutch musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen (Lost In The New Real). Mr Hauer performs spoken word introductions to each track as a Doctor Voight Kampff, with his typical humour, and unmistakable voice.

Would have been a good choice to play Magneto, if they had done an X-Men movie in the 80's, before the character was ruined.

I have not seen Blind Fury. I will rectify this mistake given the positives it is generating here.

Yes. Hauer is basically Stick in that.
I also enjoyed him as a bounty hunter (opposite Gene Simmons as a terrorist) in WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE.
Both of these creak a little with 80's cheesiness, but his performances are great.

More like they were both directly influenced by the Zatoichi films of the 1960's.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Anne Rice say the she envisioned a young Rutger Hauer as her Lestat?

Yes, she did. Which shows how far off-model Tom Cruise and Stuart Townsend were.

Hang on. She said the young Rutger Hauer looked like the way she had envisioned Lestat. Not she envisioned a young Rutger Hauer as Lestat. There's a difference.
She had a picture of Lestat in her mind when she created him.
40 years later, she pointed to a picture of a young Rutger Hauer and said, this is the way I had it in my head when I dreamt him up, though I hadn't seen Rutger Hauer at that point.
She originally hated the idea of Cruise but later said she was wrong after seeing the film and that he worked as Lestat.
