You may have seen some 30 seconds clips not going too much into details in the news about what is happening in Hong Kong. So you may not have a full scope of the situation. Last night ( Sunday night ), following a day of protest, a huge group of chinese triad went in the streets in one area of Hong Kong, Yuen Long, as well as in the metro and hurt people. The area police office closed its doors and grids, the equivalent of 9-1-1 was turned off and they only went 30 minutes afterwards. They turned their back on the citizens.
Here is a little recap:
The situation is worsening. The government is not doing anything to fix the issue.
I am heartbroken for a place I currently call home and who was one of the safest places to be in the World.

The BBC is also reporting that the Internet reporting, controlled by China, is allowing posts and reports praising the white clad gangs activity and removing any other information to the contrary. It appears the Chinese government is behind this attack on the people that desire democracy.

And listening to the morning news, there wasn't a whisper of this. Usually Canadian media is on the ball. Thanks for sharing this Didier, and stay safe.

Trevor, the BBC was leading with the Hong Kong attacks and CNN was pushing it behind several stories that revolved around US politics and the escalating situation in Iran. CBC had zip this morning and that was disappointing.

As with everything in the world, this one is a bit more complicated than it seems. The district the train station attacks happened is in the middle of a group of villages. For the past couple decades Hong Kong villagers have worked to maintain the favor of the Communist government, to protect the special real-estate tax privileges they have enjoyed since British colonial rule. In land-scarce Hong Kong, the villagers have long-feared they could lose their land to the powerful real-estate developers or to the Hong Kong government declaring eminent domain on them.
The guys attacking the pro-democracy folks are most probably professional criminals as well as local land owners who think they are "standing up" for mainland China. It's unlikely they are working for or with the Hong Kong government. This is the last thing the HK establishment needs.

Thank you guys. The situation is evolving further. The government and the Chief executive tried to address the issues during a press conference and at one moment, they couldn't face the questions, they just turned their backs and went away.
There is more and more proof of a lot of irregularities. Also, during Sunday night's "attack", one woman was attacked as well: she is the wife of a well-know mob boss. Yesterday through the day, several rumors started growing stronger that there were going to be a " triad curfew " in several parts of Hong Kong's New Territories, especially in Yuen Long area were the whole thing was at the worst, and Tai Po Market metro station " Lennon Wall" ( you can google it if you want ) were the protest is also quite strong. It is turning into an intergang fight for new areas of controls. Some people are concerned it is going to be a reboot of the 60's and 70's corrupted police and gangs fights.
I work not too far away from Tai Po Market and it is on my way home. So, I was a bit anxious.Thankfully, nothing happened anywhere. But in Yuen Long, the place was really quiet and deserted, like "The Chinese New Year's holidays from 20 years ago when all the shops would be closed and everybody travelled back to China" as one of my teammates who lives there told me this morning. The tactic of the criminals employed by China to scare people is nothing new, they did that in 2014 during the umbrella revolution near the end of the movement. They cannot officially interfere with Hong Kong politics but they cannot let it go. Usually, this is also the Technic they use to make someone from the government really unpopular and have that person forced out for whatever reason, often medical...
So yep, I am on my guard. I have been asked by friends and colleagues to refrain from going to some sensitive areas, as well as not wearing black t-shirts ( protesters ) and carrying a long umbrellas. But of course, I do not go with those advise. I just avoid crowded areas.
See? paranoia is getting on the people.

Maybe some of you have seen that the current situation in Hong Kong is becoming more and more chaotic.
The police is starting to behave in very authoritarian way, the protesters are joined more and more by the residents of Hong Kong as the whole thing is escalating to very dangerous levels.
On last Thursday night, several protesters were arrested in a district. On Friday, they were transferred to the police station next to my building. At night, some protesters came to ask for their release. At first it was just the police officers hiding inside their building. Then the riot police came in, blocking roads and playing cat and mouse with the protesters.
I was outside of the entrance lobby with many of the residents of my residence. We were just witnessing the action, not being part of it. Suddenly, without warnings, warrants, or justified reasons, the riot police started to yell and charge in the direction of our entrance lobby. They forced entry in the lobby. The flat owners are considering what is the next step on a legal point of view.
On Saturday and Sunday nights, several actions took place in several other districts. Again, with the police and protesters behaving badly. But the one who stand out is the fact that the riot police officers removed the pants of a female protesters and they carried her by the legs and arms, exposing her private parts to the press and the public. One officer also asked a foreigner to kneel down in front of him.
On another personal level, I have to go to travel to China for work from time to time. I have some photos and videos of the protests on my phone. I have been asked by my managers to consider to either delete the photos or to not bring any computers or mobile devices, as the Chinese side immigration officers do random search and they seem to also input some spyware on the devices. They do not want the real information to be shared with the citizens of China.
Today, there is a huge general strike. Major transportation ways are stopped. There will be several protests or rallies a little bit everywhere in the city. As I am a foreigner, I don't really have a choice but to come to work because the government is starting to pull out the " Foreign countries are interfering with us... here is the proof" card. I am actually ready to the possibility to walk back home 9 miles after work.
