Richard,

Double brain blank on my part!! I was thinking of Karl Kesel, not Keith Williams.

Thank you,
Marc

Who would you guys pick to be JB's "default" inker (as Mark Farmer is to Alan Davis). if such a thing were to be desired?

My two favorite JB inkers (other than JB himself) have to be Terry Austin and Joe Rubinstein, but I don't think either of them could be the default.  A later reunion of Byrne/Austin did not look the same as the X-MEN days (did Austin's style change or did JB's process?) and Rubinstein's once tight and detailed work seems to have loosened up too much through the years.

I would have liked to have seen more from Gene Day and Tony DeZuniga though.

"Default" inker... hard to argue with the legendary team of Byrne/Austin.

Does the topic of default inker include any discussion by Mr. Byrne? I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't want Terry Austin right now, not only because Mr. Byrne's style has changed, but Terry Austin's style has changed. They would undoubtedly get to "fit" each other again at some point... but would either be glad with the output?

M'self, I'm an old fogey, and I believe I'd like Joe SInnott as the "default" inker.

Well, Mr. Byrne just said upthread that he likes seeing different inkers, so I'm guessing he wouldn't want a default inker!  We can be realistic and eliminate someone like Terry Austin whose last job on JB didn't really look like the glory days of the X-MEN, or we can be imaginative and choose deceased or retired inkers.

Karl Kesel was a good fit.

Klaus Janson was an interesting inker to be paired with on Wolverine.

Before you go dismissing Austin, think about how JB was pencilling at the time. There’s a world of difference between that and how he was pencilling on UX-M. The difference in the art between those times doesn’t fall squarely on Austin’s inks.

I personally feel ELSEWHEN would look absolutely marvelous with Austin inks.

Larry Stucker -- I think that's his name -- inked JB a few times in the early 2000s on various DC comics, and the results were great. His style is pretty close to Austin's but not quite as "mechanical" or "shiny" looking.

I have to go with Dan Green as the "default" inker. Even though both he and JB changed their art styles between the 70's and 00's, they both remained compatible with each other.

I'm surprised nobody's picked Joe Rubinstein.  Those CAPTAIN AMERICA issues were about as good as comics get!  I would definitely have made Rubinstein the default inker for Jim Starlin.  (In my ideal fan scenario, that is.  In reality, he's loosened up too much for either.)
