I guess they're not following the animated movie that
closely. Mulan seems to be a much better fighter this
time around. I don't mind it.

I’m sensing a lot of PC crap being shove in for a “woke” audience. The matchmaker finds a suitable husband for Mulan, who is already a good fighter. The character arc of the animated version is gone, it seems.

According to a French cinema site, they cannot use
several characters, like Mushu, who were part of a
deal with Jeffrey Katzenberg.
Story in French

As a side note, and maybe our friend Neil can confirm
that a bit more, from what I have seen, this movie is
going to look Epic in the same ways I have seen from
some classic Chinese old War era movies, with a lot of
beautiful charging scenes, costumes designs and such.

The fact some added characters by Disney for the
cartoon version are not there is maybe a good thing,
... to kinda be closer to the original story.

Mulan being a skilled martial artist before she joins the army is part of the original story and not a modern invention.

It is not, however, part of the animated movie on which this is supposedly based.

Is this a remake, or a completely different telling of the story?

Maybe combining bits from the animated movie and parts from the actual legend that Disney left out?

The current reports are that the movie won't even be a musical, although they are going to include instrumental versions of the songs from the animated film.

This doesn’t feel like a Disney movie to me. I wonder how well it will go
over in China. When Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon came out back in
2000, not many people when to see it there.

I don't think I can do these live action adaptations of
animated Disney films. I want to be fair and give them a
chance, but they smack of high school musicals compared to
the artistry of the animated movies.

If it's closer to the original tale, I might be interested in seeing this. I never watched the Disney version.
