Inspired by the Beeb's Desert Island Discs, in which guests are asked to pick eight albums, a book and one luxury item to accompany them in castaway isolation, I thought I would start this thread. You are charged, my castaway guest, in picking 5 movies, one book and one luxury item to your deserted desert island location. There is a key stipulation -- SO PAY ATTENTION -- and that is that no more than two movies can come from the same decade.

We are not talking a list of best movies ever made. We are not, even, necessarily talking a list of your favourite movies. We are talking the movies that you feel would serve you best being watched over and over and over again. And a book. And a luxury item. Please volunteer your reasons why!

Edited to add: and I'll even throw in a CD as well. So 5 movies, one book, one CD, one luxury item. There is no wifi or internet on this island. Fire away.

Iím guessing the premise of this thread precludes having a powerful radio transmitter as the luxury item?

I think the Radio 4 programme's rules are that the luxury item cannot be animate or, quite vaguely, overly practical.

I'll get  the ball rolling:

Five movies:
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark - for rewatch value.
2. Glengarry Glenn Ross - so much bitching and moaning might make me feel better about being marooned on my lonesome
3. Lawrence of Arabia - gonna have plenty of time, and this gives you lots of minutes to watch. And it's brilliant.
4. Star Wars - I'd need the lift of the happy ending.
5. Amadeus - great film, plus I get all that great music

Book - Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny

Luxury Item - a piano!

BOOK
THE CHANGEWINDS Omnibus by Jack L. Chalker
This book is an enjoyable read and a good length.

CD
THE CARNIVAL by Wyclef Jean
- Jean effortlessly blends multiple genres in this collection of songs that can be enjoyed without the need to skip any musical track.

MOVIES
CLASH OF THE TITANS
FRIDAY
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
STAR WARS
WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
- I have watched all of these movies multiple times, and my enjoyment of them has either remained the same or increased.

LUXURY ITEM
A CD/DVD player combo
- Without one, the CD and DVDs can't be played.

I forgot the CD. Well done, Wallace, for observing my own rules better than me!

Regarding the need for a DVD player, I would say the conceit of the game is that you can play the disks without needing to burn your luxury item on a player (so feel free to pick another, Wallace!)

So... five movies, a book, a CD, and a luxury item. I'm assuming that fresh water, food, and shelter are readily available, so I don't have to resort to military and Boy Scout manuals. I'm also assuming a player for the movies and CD.

Casablanca
Blazing Saddles
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Aladdin
The Incredibles

Redshirts by John Scalzi

The Who's Quadrophenia

One of those fifty year flashlights, or whichever ones are super long lasting. I'll include a box of batteries to keep it working for a LOOONG time.

The Godfather
Star Wars
Infinity War
Endgame
Unforgiven

The Allman Brothers Band: The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings

A dwelling of some sort to keep me dry.

Iím not sure about the book. Iíll have to come back on that one.
