Talk about feeling OLD. 20 years since ANGEL premiered. I remember it being such a big topic of discussion on early versions of this board. Here's a 44 min special on the anniversary: Link

I refuse to acknowledge that much time has passed.

I will say that since watching this retrospective, I want to go back and watch the series again. So many great moments and storylines that I had forgotten but were rekindled. Not to start a BUFFY vs ANGEL war, but at the end of the day the latter won out for me. Soooooo good.

I think the first three seasons of Buffy were TV gold (I still maintain it was the closest I came to seeing the X-Men on TV), but then it suffered, with the occasional peak of genius showing through (Hush/The Body/Once More with Feeling).
Angel, bar one season, managed to maintain its quality of story longer I think.

I am a huge Angel fan (I think I may dare say I like it better than Buffy overall). The last episode is my favorite of any series ever.

There are about five or six series finales that are benchmarks for me. ANGEL is one of them.

ANGEL definitely won out for me as the shows went on, helped no doubt that they took more of my favorite characters from BUFFY (Cordelia, Wesley, Darla, Dru.) I think the actors got to act more there age and I liked the mix of people they used and added. Great show.

Would've liked more with Illyria and the After the Fall comic made me think season six could've been fun, but the season five finale was SUCH a great way to end the series, I'm good. Something to be said for quitting while you're ahead.
(But 20 years?! Ye gods!)

Angel was the best! I will love that show until my dying day..
And yeah as others have said it really did eclipse it Buffy as time went on. (Buffy's best was definitely the first three seasons, with a handful of great individual episodes later.)
Such great writing, aptly backed up by some truly outstanding performances that met every challenge the character arcs brought upon them. (Alexis Denisof in particular..)
I watched the 20th Anniversary interviews and bought the accompanying magazine. I have to say everyone's aged so well, that if the option was available they really could do a follow up movie. If only the stars would align for that to happen!

Would've liked more with Illyria
-----
My one issue with the way ANGEL ended is that it left it where Fred's soul had been consumed and obliterated in Illyria's resurrection, which seemed like a bleak ending for the character. I know the plan had been to bring Fred back and have her and Illyria co-exist, which is something I would have liked to have seen.
