Jon Stewart gives an impassioned speech to Congress for its failure in responding to the helath concerns of 9-11 responders:

911 first responders, much like some veterans, seem to be forgotten for their sacrifice.

9/11 was eighteen years ago. We might as well ask Congress to care about Civil War vets.

They do seem to care about the Civil War vets... but only in the South and if their statues are going to be removed.

As I watched Stewart’s speech, it occurred to me that if any congressman had clutched their chest and fell to the floor, those first responders would have scrambled over each other in a rush to start CPR.  Meanwhile those same congressmen are content to let the first responders slowly die for the tiniest political advantage.

The notion that Congress exists to serve the People has never had much truth to it. And these unfortunates just don't have the clout to be noticed. Not enough of them to swing any votes, and their economic impact is minimal.

I admit I don't understand how this give anyone (Republicans presumably?) a political advantage to not help these people but then I'm finding American politics utterly surreal these days.

Though I suppose it's just as surreal possibly as non-Brits are finding our politics.

Congress, and notably Republicans, know there are a lot of Americans who harbor a “What have you done for me lately?” attitude. And they know those people don’t want to see their tax dollars “wasted”.

The house unanimously passed the bill. Now it's in McConnell's hands to put it on the floor.

The political advantage they are trying to gain is putting unpopular items on the same bill with the popular 9/11 relief bill to get the unpopular item passed.  They don’t want to “waste” the 9/11 bill by letting it pass clean.  Of course this a technique used by both parties.

Term limits at every level of government might go a good ways toward doing
the right thing instead of the right-now thing.
