Anything with Werner Herzog can't be bad. I may have to wait awhile but I am going to see this show sometime.

I read an article that the producers were thinking of
replacing Baby Yoda puppet with CGI if it didn't look
realistic enough in post-production. Reportedly, Herzog
called them cowards and told them to leave it. LOL I'm
glad they kept the puppet. I generally find CGI
distracting.

The relative lack of CGI has been refreshing.  The few fully CGI creatures they've had looked like stop motion even.

My understanding is that THE MANDALORIAN is shot on digital sets. They literally use the Unreal Game Engine to create the environments the actors are working in.

People don't find CGI distracting. They find bad CGI distracting. It's like plastic surgery. If it is done well, you don't notice.

+++++++
I feel like almost every interaction with Herzog goes that way.
"Would you like some more orange juice Werner?"
"Coward!"

If you had only seen Star Wars (1977), you could tune into this series and it would work. Aesthetically it's a combination of Western and Japanese Cinema (Lone Wolf & Cub, Have Gun Will Travel, Seven Samurai). The Empire is defeated (as the open crawl implies will happen if the Death Star is blown up) and you don't *need* to know what a Mandalorian is. They have dropped hints about their backstory repeatedly without a full on info-dump. Knowing about Yoda isn't necessary either, the plot only depends on the viewer knowing that he's the MacGuffin child that is driving the plot.
