Met him once, and we talked on the phone a couple of times. I thanked him for enlightening me without making me feel that I was being lectured.

RIP.

Will be forever known for bringing the L.A. gang problem to the big screen with "Boyz in the Hood". I love that movie and from time to time, will break it out and watch it. Also liked "Higher Learning" and his "Shaft" remake.

He also called it that riots were going to happen if the LA police officers were acquitted.

He will be missed.

JB - When you 2 spoke, was he familiar with your work?

I met him twice myself.  Laid back and unpretentious.

I saw him interviewed for THE HOLLYWOOD MASTERS episode on Netflix - he was as interesting and engaging as his movies.  The episode that is streaming now is about 30 minutes, but you can read a transcript of the whole 90 minute discussion here - well worth it:
