Sad to hear.
Honestly I thought she would be much older than 70.

I was also surprised by her age. Just a couple of years older than me. Than means she must have been VERY young when she started on MTM.

I saw the headline and went immediately to look up if her stated age was a typo. Ted Knight, twenty-six years her senior, could have been her father! Surprised me, for sure.

Such a funny actor with a rare quirky quality that felt entirely genuine and not at all put on.  She was fantastic on MTM and equally funny on EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND.

I remarked on her age as well when I first saw it until I remembered that she was the youngest actor on that set.

Yeah, she was only 24 when her first episode aired.  Her character was ditzy on the surface but the way Ms. Engel played Georgette with so much love and compassion and patience for Ted, she felt like a much older soul.

I once saw her at a supermarket in Midtown Manhattan.  I've lived in New York a long time now and I never approach celebs, but I love MTM so much and there was Georgette!  Shopping in a quiet supermarket on a weeknight.  So we were in the same aisle and I crouched over and told her I apologized for bothering her but I loved her work... then left.    But I realized right after she was reaching for toilet paper as I interrupted her.

She was at the checkout later with a full cart and noticed that the person behind her only had a few items so she pushed her cart aside and let the person go ahead of her.  No diva she.

“I enjoy your work” or, to gush a bit, “I love your work” are the correct phrasing when encountering celebs. And walking away is also good.

That space should be invaded only with great care!
