Mike N. - could be worse. As Cyclops gets older*, he might need bifocals... so when he uses his blasts, he'd cut his toenails automatically too.

*No, he shouldn't get older. Then again, super heroes who need glasses puzzles me as well. In a Superman sequence, when he lost his powers, he took off his glasses and everything was blurry. Why? Clark Kent has 20/20 vision... why would that change if he lost his powers?

Not every superhero has 20/20 vision.

To my mind, losing an eye would throw Cyclops' powers off. He'd have to relearn how to use it and compensate for the loss.

------

Apparently in this new storyline, Cyclops runs the risk of his head asploding if he uses his powers, because one eye releasing optic blasts doesn't relieve the same amount of pressure as two eyes. I'm pretty sure that doesn't make sense in context of how his powers are shown to work, but whatevs.

Yep, there's no pressure in Cyclops' head.

However, looking over the way his power has been described over time, it's little wonder we're reaching this level of absurdity. For example, from OHOTMU and Marvel.com entries:

"Cyclops possesses the mutant ability to project a beam of heatless ruby-colored concussive force from his eyes, which act as inter-dimensional apertures between this universe and another. Cyclops' body constantly absorbs ambient energy, such as sunlight, from his environment into his body's cells that allows him to open the apertures."

Talk about an unnecessary explanation. Ugh.

The most important thing to understand -- and I think it was JB who said this -- is that Scott's optic rays aren't a "solid" beam. They just look that way. They're a "pulse." If they really were "solid" they would've pushed Scott's head off his body the first time they emerged.

Also, the "Nightcrawler is really a demon" bit got retconned, I think. His father was a mutant who looked demonic but wasn't an actual demon.
