An interesting fellow, and obviously an intelligent and well-educated one, too. It's hard not to wonder what his life might have been like if he hadn't been complicit in the game-show scandal.

You know what I wonder? What, exactly, were the game shows doing that was WRONG? They were entertainment. People had fun watching. It was like professional wrestling. All the hoopla strikes me as on parr with arresting Jack Webb for impersonating a police officer.

Important to note that Van Doren got in trouble for lying to the Grand Jury, not for cheating.

Quite right--an important distinction, and I should have pointed it out.

You make a good point about the scandal. It's hard for me to get into the mindset of a viewer, back in the fifties, who must have believed that the game shows were on the level.

I'm still not convinced all game shows are on the level.

One particular game show has had several sketchy moments.....

I remember watching Give Us A Clue (basically charades with celebrity players) and being suddenly certain that everyone knew the answer.

Re the game show scandal, I think the difference is the contestants were members of the public. Part of the shows' appeal was the idea that you, the viewer at home, could be up there winning the money. It must have been disheartening to get on and find that the producers liked someone else better so you had no chance.

(And they picked a tall, college-educated white guy to win. Imagine how that would play today!)
