Comics should be doing things like Hulkverine and the Savage Avengers that 13-year-old's would think is cool. Or do we not want to sell to them?

In all of these clarion calls for mediocrity and comics that in no way challenge the status quo or represent the reality of our society's shifting priorities, with so many here banging their tin cups on the table shouting, "More of the same! More of the same! More of the same!" I think we may have lost sight of the goal of actually selling these books.

If you mean Hulkverine, then I would've agreed with you until I actually read it and realised that despite the silly name, it's actually a decent story/character.

I read the story that introduced the character and I thought that it was garbage. I just can't get past a character with the powers of Wolverine and the Hulk. It's another stupid redundant knockoff character, but this time it's a knockoff of two characters.

I Googled. The art looks good, but the concepts seem like creative bankruptcy.

Brian, I think that it was Stan Lee who said "that you should never give the readers what they think they want".
Just because a 13 year old (or a writer or editor) thinks that an idea is "cool" doesn't necessarily mean that said idea is a good idea or is an appropriate idea for a particular character.

Stan Lee didn’t write down to the readers. And 13 year olds notoriously do not want stories written “for” them.

Mind you, when I look at comics today, I cannot help but think of SOUTH PARK’s manatees.....

OMIGOD!!!

How sad is it that the picture I drew above as a joke (which I posted on the board a decade ago) has become sort of reality at Marvel now?

And, really... "Hulkverine"??? What a stupid name! And, yes, so was "Wulk." That was the point!

Mea culpa, JB. I should have realized that once an idea is released into the ether, it is out there for good. Sigh.

Now I'm waiting for the Wunisher. Or is Punerine any better?

Matt, I'd rather read about the Incorrigible Wulk than Hulkverine any day.

I like that he's incorrigible, for one thing. Not that I blame his high school teachers for hanging that label on him. You're not going to get that guy to behave in class.

Isn't that sad?  There are so many good artists out there these days--sometimes amazing artists--and they're all being wasted.  For the longest times (since the 80's), it's seemed that writers are the driving force in comics and that the artists didn't really matter.  (Look at almost any DC comic--the covers often have eight credits on the cover, like four or five artists on a single issue is a good thing.)  Now, I don't even know if the writers matter that much anymore, it's the editorial gimmicks they're selling above all else.
