One of the reasons why I rarely buy any current Marvel comics is because a lot of the stories in the current books are nothing more than bad fan fiction or What If stories told in the main continuity. When you have stories where Flash Thompson becomes Venom and joins both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy or have Conan joining a new Avengers team comprised of "heroes" who kill (the other team members are Punisher,Wolverine,Elektra,Venom, and Doctor Voodoo) called the "Savage Avengers", then you know the company has not only jumped the shark, they have jumped a whale. Is Marvel creatively bankrupt, creatively lazy, desperate,or are just letting creators do whatever the hell they want because they know that Marvel's publishing division's days are numbered?

I agree. Comics today are terrible compared to the work
that was done pre 90s. Someone did a comparison of a
comic that just came out, to an Avengers Annual that
came on in the 80's(?) and the new comic was so shallow
and meaningless, while the Avengers book had so much
depth, danger, characters struggling ... there was just
no contest which was far superior.

Conan is an Avenger and part of Marvel continuity?

Why didn't Roy Thomas think to do this? Oh...wait...

To be fair, he was before just not on 'our' Earth. This time, he's coming through some witch's portal or something. So at least they are trying to explain it.

In my years reading Spider-Man, these happened:

He dated a Catwoman wannabe. Alien costume. Wore two different uniforms. Beat the hell out of Firelord. Killed a woman in Germany. Got married to a supermodel. Got rich and poor. Got cosmic powers. His parents returned. Clone saga.

Plus, Ned Leeds died, Harry Osborn died, Aunt May died. Flash dated the Black Cat, Robbie went to jail, Betty joined a cult and Glory Grant dated a werewolf. Nathan had a gambling problem, Mary Jane's cousin had an eating disorder and Mary Jane started smoking. Hobgoblin became a demon. She-Venom and Lady Octopus.

If only old readers had the internet back then...

For my part, I have been writing my own fan fiction for forty years. And it's all where I intended it to be... on my computer and in storage on paper. Which is where it belongs.

It would seem that Marvel (and maybe DC) have forgotten that they need to make comics that BUYERS WANT TO BUY. Not to indulge their own stories.

Honestly, how many friends have ideas for stories that are appealing to their friends? No offense, and of course some do - but usually, they're kinda dull, no sense of story save for cool moments, and most often a Mary Sue or Gary Stu.

Conan in the modern era? Once in a while, that type of concept is a great idea - such as Thor or Hercules. It was a House of Ideas type of story. But not for long term.

And Punisher, Elektra, and Venom are villains, and Wolverine just barely stays on the hero side of the line. Brother Voodoo, in the rare occasions I read the character, seemed a pretty good guy. Conan is NOT a hero, and he's NOT a villain. He is a wandering barbarian who generally seems to work for common good than not... sort of "chaotic good" if one is familiar with Dungeons and Dragons.

Eh, whatever. Seems that Marvel has been driving themselves so far into the ground that they can't even see sunshine anymore. And as noted... if it consistently sells comics, that's their business.

Mario, above, describes the time that I stopped reading Spider-Man.

The explanation isn't the problem. Neither is Conan being part of the MU (although having a license character as part of the MU isn't such a good idea for obvious reasons). The problem is Conan joining the Avengers and the whole concept of the Savage Avengers. Seriously, the whole concept of the Savage Avengers sounds like an idea that a 13 year old comic book fan would come up with. What does it say about the creators who come up with stupid ideas like this and what does it say about the Marvel editors who approve it? What's funny (or should I say "sad") this isn't the stupidest idea that has come from the House of Stupid Ideas over the recent years. That honor arguably belongs to the creation of Hulkerine.

It would be super awesome if the Savage Avengers had a sweet van (that's all tricked out with the latest cool stuff) that they use to drive to their adventures. Too bad they have a stupid girl in their club but at least she has big boobs.

Savage Avengers sounds like a team formed by Ka-Zar and Shanna The She-Devil.....

If you mean Hulkverine, then I would've agreed with you until I actually read it and realised that despite the silly name, it's actually a decent story/character.
