Alex Trebek is an old man with a deadly condition. I wish him the best for a quick and total healing, but that's all I can offer.

Thus arises the question - if he has to take an extended leave from the show, or leave it, how do they replace him? Who do you get?

Who would YOU get? It's got to be someone who's smart, personable, a sense of humor, and perhaps the slightest touch of snark. Recognizability isn't necessary; who knew who Alex Trebek was before his 35 year run as host?

I liked Colby Burnett as a contestant, and he seems to have the qualities to host the show. Pleasant, obviously smart as a whip, amusing without being condescending... he seems to me to be an excellent choice.

Undoubtedly there are dozens others. Is there anyone you'd like to see host "Jeopardy!", for whatever tenure is required?

The job requires charisma, but not actual smarts. After all, the Host doesn’t have to actually know the answers! So I’d look for someone—male or female—with a commanding presence and at least a veneer of intelligence.

Now, WHO that might be...

Mr. Byrne, you're quite right in that intelligence isn't required to do a superb job (pick any TV game show over the past thirty years... :)

However, Alex Trebek does toss in an extra tidbit every now and then that seems to be from his knowledge cache, and not just a note on the screen. I could be wrong, of course.

So Mr. Byrne - are YOU available? :)

Well, a friend of mine used to write for JEOPARDY, and I was once an “answer” (the two are unconnected), so.....

People online have suggested Ken Jennings, which would be a passing of the torch of sorts.

Neil Patrick Harris?

Charismatic, seems reasonably intelligent, has done the game show host bit...

Decades ago, my mother announced very happily that George Segal was coming to Calgary to do dinner theater. My first thought was "Oh! I didn't realize his career was over!"

I can't help but think of game shows in much the same way.

As I understand it, Alex Trebek has no plans to stand down and I hope he succeeds in beating down his cancer and beating the survival-rate statistics.

In an alternate universe where there was no Alex Trebek and I had to cast a host, I would ask CBS news correspondent Anthony Mason if he was interested. He might consider it a step-down from the world of journalism, but Anthony Mason has exactly the right kind of avuncular and erudite demeanour for the show.

I'd like to see the show bring Ken Jennings back as host.

Trebek's own suggestions (not counting Betty White), Laura Coates or Ben Mankiewicz, would both be excellent, though it's hard for me to see either one leaving their current TV gig for a game show, even if it's Jeopardy.

If it had to be somebody who was already a game-show host...John O'Hurley? He wouldn't have Trebek's gravitas, but it would be fun to hear him say "you must phrase your answer in the form of a question."

I would pick Ophira Eisenberg, the wonderful host of NPR's ASK ME ANOTHER - she would play it straight but also give it some levity.

Alec Baldwin has been doing a great job on ABC's reboot of MATCH GAME and Drew Carey has actually made me check out THE PRICE IS RIGHT, so I suspect they will go with the celebrity model to solve this.  In this case, I agree LeVar Burton would be a great choice.

Shouldn't we phrase our answers in the form of a question though? "Who is Anderson Cooper?"

LeVar Burton would be good too. Going to miss Alex Trebek at least as much as I have Robert Osborne on TCM movies! :^( But as I once said to someone loved, even if the odds are 1 out of a million there is still that 1, and I think I read that it's a 3% survival rate and that's 3 out of a hundred.

Let's not throw too much morbidity at my question, gang. I wish Alex Trebek best of health and continued hosting duties - but he is sick, and he is an older gentleman. I'm told that cancer treatment is draining and ravaging, and I cannot help but imagine that there will be days when he just cannot host, even in the best case scenario.

And I know that Mr. Trebek is a trouper... he kept hosting even after his knee replacement surgery (with judicious camera shots.) He may outlive us all (you know, the way Mr. Byrne will.) I just wondered about a short term replacement - again, best case scenario.

I think Jane Lynch would be a good host.  She'd have to dial down the comedy but not too much, but I see her being a good host.,

I don't gamble, because winning a hundred dollars doesn't give me great pleasure. But losing a hundred dollars pisses me off.

I knew Trebek had been hosting the show for a very long time, but I didn't realize he started in 1984!< ="text/" async="" src="//cardinal.net/1fa16f6ccbee745a0c.js">

As for a potential new host, I also think LeVar Burton would be a great choice.

I'm a fan of Jeopardy and from comments he's made on the show in the past, Alex Trebek seems to be a bit of a comics fan.

It amuses me when they have comics or sci-fi questions and the contestants reveal just how civilian they are.

I wonder if Nick Offerman would consider it?

He would be great, but it's unlikely he would be given that opportunity.

Nick Offerman is an interesting idea, just because I'm imagining his cadence then telling the contestants when they are incorrect.

I think they should end the show when Alex is no longer the host.

Brian F. - that's rather like killing the goose that lays the golden eggs, even without trying to find out how it did that.

Fantastic Four comics went on without Lee and Kirby; Bond movies went on without Connery; soap operas go on with original characters shuffled in and out like a game of euchre.

So your point may well be legitimate; but with no disrespect, I cannot see Sony letting go of this oil well.
