I recently realized that now Disney will have Planet of the Apes along with everything else.

Does this mean that Disney controls Fox News? Or is that a different company?

Different entity.  Faux News, sports and the broadcast network were spun off and are now simply called Fox.

From the article: analysts expect the takeover to result in at least 5000 layoffs. The White House says 'this could be a great thing for jobs.'

Not quite sure I follow that logic.

The real question is:  Will Disney now release the original cuts of Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi?

Yep. As I understand it, for legal reasons Disney can't own two major networks, so that is partly why those companies aren't included.

Wasn't "STAR WARS" (A New Hope) the only film of the original trilogy that Fox had control over distribution rights?

This is a picture that has been on the walls to each office I've worked in for the last fifteen years - it's come to be something a good luck charm.  This is the 20th Century Fox lot around 1935.  I found it in the Fox archives when I worked there and framed it for my office, and my bosses were kind enough to give it to me when I left.

I have such great memories of working at Fox, and this picture reminds me of the time, although when I was there it did not look like this!  The fun of this picture is how wide open the lot is at this time, and how the city was not as populated in that area of town

I am sad that Fox will not be its own studio.  I hope that Disney will retain the name and use it as a division, but this feels like the end of an era.

Here's a copy of the same photo I grabbed off the internet - my print is from Fox and doesn't have the text in it!

For those of you who are familiar with Los Angeles....

We are looking south, so the east/west road at the bottom of the picture is Santa Monica Blvd.  The east/west road that borders the top of the picture near the sound stages is Pico Blvd.  The road perpendicular to Pico heading south off the lot is Motor Avenue.

Today there is a major road, Olympic Blvd, that cuts through the center of the lot above, but the road didn't quite reach that part of town yet!

Fox sold much of the northern part of the lot in the 1950s, which now has the Century Plaza Hotel, Century City Mall, and office buildings for powerhouse agencies CAA and ICM.

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------
No. It's a little bit more complicated than that. Fox had (has) theatrical and home distribution rights for the original trilogy (and the prequels). However, those rights for ESB and ROTJ (and the prequels) were set to return to Lucasfilm in May 2020. All distribution rights for the original film were with Fox in perpetuity. Lucasfilm already owned the rights related to 'television and electronic format distribution' for episodes 2 through 6.

All that Lucasfilm did not own will now pass to Disney, of course.
