I'd love a great new documentary on Tolkien!

Are there any really good documentaries about Tolkien? The ones I've seen have been straightforward biographical "and-then-Tolkien-did-this" stuff which didn't particularly engage me.

Not being a huge Tolkien fan, this trailer did nothing for me.  As an outsider looking in, it felt like it had to align certain LOTR tropes with the real life of the author and, as such, it felt staged and fake to me.  "Fellowship".  That's the line in the trailer that nailed it home for me, not to say there weren't other references or cinematic nods in the trailer either.

Big old "pass" for me.

A lot of elements in Lord of the Rings Tolkien drew from his experiences in World War 1.  I think that that's what they were trying to express visually.  Whether that works for you or not is a completely separate question, of course.

Echoing Michael above, I'd probably be interested in a documentary rather than a biopic.

I'd like to see something about his troubled childhood - Look Who's Tolkien!

On a related note, Humphrey Carpenter's biography of Tolkien is worth reading.
