I donít agree that we are taught to hate and fear. I think evolution takes care of that. DESTROY WHATEVER ISNíT US!!

What we have to learn is NOT to do that.

I think that our hates and fears are sometimes targeted by the beliefs of our elders, but the underlying drive is, as JB notes, an evolutionary one over which we must exercise control.

In grad school, I learned the prevailing theory of criminality (as of 2001) was that a combination of weak internal and external controls make one more likely to commit crimes. Some people never develop inhibitions against doing the wrong thing, and even strong external controls (such as seeing cops nearby) do not make up for what the person doesn't have inside.

I think back once again to a humorous essay in THE SKEPTICAL INQUIRER. The premise was that scientists had accidentally proven God does not exist, and the effect this had on the world. One instance was the man from Texas who had not murdered his wife because of his fear of God. Now he didnít do it because of his fear of the Texas State Correctional Institution.

I think JB is right about evolutionary instincts.  Tribalism is In there deep.  And that seems to be at the core of Neeson's response.  Someone from this other tribe/group harmed someone from my tribe/group, so now I take revenge against a member of that tribe/group. This is pretty much how every blood feud and war in history began.
