Has anyone ever seen any reference to Alexander Courage being influenced by the Getz/Jobim recording of "The Girl from Ipanema" for his TOS theme?  It's not the overture/horn fanfare, but once the upbeat tempo section comes in, there's a lot of melodic and textural overlap (in terms of specific phrases, particularly the tail end of the GFP b-section).  Considering GFP was a huge, influential hit and won the Grammy in '65, it was very much 'in the air' - and would explain exactly why the theme music for a space opera has a bossa nova feel.
