Well, I now know that Will Smith may be able to rap, but he can't sing.

I'm not sure it's the quality of the singing as much as it is the low-energy vibe of the whole sequence.  Robin Williams wasn't exactly a great singer but he invested his tunes with so much mania that he sold them.

It was a lot of fun, and much better than what the trailers and music clips made it out to be.

The destination is the same, the signposts along the way very familiar, but the journey was enjoyable.

That said, I still like the animated Jafar and Iago a lot more as the villains, than what we had here.

My wife and daughter take in the live action versions of the animated classics together and they really enjoyed It.

Won’t be seeing this.

In the animated original with Robin Williams, I didn’t like the use of the “three wishes only” gimmick that was not part of the original story.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this film.

Naomi Scott, who plays Jasmine, was a real breakout and had great chemistry with Mena Massoud (Aladdin). I think she would have made a fantastic Belle in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

Will Smith (and a team of very skilled VFX artists) brought a very different vibe to the role of the genie and I thought it worked very well. Robin Williams and Gilbert Godfrey's performances remain unique to the animated version, and this is something different. I haven't cared much for these remakes, which have been largely flat and unengaging, but I think they got it right with this one.

Will Smith met my expectations, which were very low. Where Robin Williams' performance as the Genie seemed barely contained, Smith's seemed barely awake. I've seen the Broadway show, so I know it's possible to have an energetic and funny Genie without doing a Williams impression.

Jafar was also horribly miscast, in my opinion. My wife thought he was "cute"...which is not something you'd want him to be. I guess they were trying to stick with a mostly Southwestern Asian-ish look for the primary cast, but I think there are plenty of "qualifying" actors that would have been a better fit.

The Alladin and Jasmine actors were both quite good.

Frank Welker is back as the voices of the monkey/elephant, tiger, and cave (so, two tigers?), so that's another bright spot.

Alan Tudyk as the voice of Iago was a waste of talent and the character as he didn't do a whole hell of a lot in this.

It's not all bad, to be sure, but overall, the original film is funnier, more dynamic, and has more heart than this remake.

The young kids in the theater seemed to like it all enough, though...so, what do I know?
