Wasn't a fan of Franklin. I know the F.F. was designed as a family dynamic, but as a youngster reading comics, having a small child around the team just wasn't attractive to me.

As for the aging aspect, again this can be cured by the readers limited stay in comics. Five years of real time may only constitute 2 years of comic time, at the most. Not enough time for a need to change a child's age.

I can be persuaded by Christopher's point here. Having Franklin at a young age mixing in with other superpowered kids-- in a family dynamic, no less-- was a pretty good way to go. It gave him something to do and left him available for whenever a good idea for a Franklin story arose.

I liked Franklin's role during JB's FF run. Especially after Annihilus attack when he developed a bond with Jarvis.

Otherwise, FF writers never seemed to know what to do with him.

Now they have Valeria to deal with.

Valeria.

Gutted one of my most praised stories, AND gave her a dumb name.

(Name itself isn’t so dumb, but dumb in context.)

"Oh my God, we can't allow this story to stand. The baby dies?? Jesus Christ on a pogo stick, we have to reverse THAT travesty! Here, let's have her get born and overnight she'll be a supergenius even smarter than Reed and she can just Mary Sue her way through everything..."

Honest, that's how it's felt.

I like Franklin as a background character, as it reinforced that this was a family first, separating the FF from other superhero teams.

But I never really liked that he was (or was destined to be) the most powerful, be-all, end-all mutant.

Valeria was a slow train wreck of a story.

IIRC, that wasn't Claremont, it was Carlos Pacheco. It seemed pretty apparent to me that Claremont intended Valeria to be a child from an alternate future where Reed (who was still trapped in Doom's mystic armor) and Sue conceived a 3rd child.

Wait a minute. Whoa. Easy.

I was aware of the beginnings of the Valeria storyline, back in the day, and was under the impression that she was from some alternate timeline where Reed and Sue's second child had lived.

Are you telling me that they undid Sue's miscarriage in "our" universe?

(looks at Valeria's Marvel Wiki biography)

WHAT THE ****?!?!?

The character is credited to Pacheco and Claremont.

Those credits are wrong. Valeria was created by Claremont and Salvador Larroca. She first appeared in issue 15 of the 3rd volume of FF.
