Trailer

I guess Superman's origin story is so generic, now, there's no copyright issues.

Maybe as a Netflix movie, the kind you skip through to get to the interesting parts. But not the kind of movie you have to watch from beginning to end in a theatre.

I'm a huge fan of Gunn's "The Specials" and "Super," so I think it's worth noting that this was written by his brothers and not him. The idea of taking a familiar premise and making it into a horror film is tried and true. "The Wizard of Oz" gets horror treatments, as does "Alice in Wonderland." There is nothing new in this set-up, only that the baby from the rocket isn't going to prioritize truth, justice, or the American way. Just a "children's" story being turned on its ear.

"Smallville" tried elements of this as well. Back when that show was on the air, a cheaply made sci-fi film called "Electra" came out with essentially the same premise except that the bad guy was going to kidnap the super-teen's mom and turn her into a brainwashed super-powered temptress bent on seducing her own son. Starring Shannon Tweed as Annette O'Toole.

This reminds me of "Electra" without Shannon Tweed. I'm still intrigued enough to go see it, but only as much as I'd be to go see a Joss Whedon film written by his brothers.

That's what happens when it isn't Ma and Pa Kent.

I dunno.  The folks who find this alien seem nice enough.

I get the impression the kid in this movie was predestined to be a naughty one.

As long as this isn't a DC film calling itself "Superman" or "Man of Steel," it could be interesting!

The mask looks a little dopey, but I wonder if that's more of a legal reason, to differentiate it enough from the previous stabs at Superman and "Smallville."

This kinda works as Ultraman's origin story from Earth-3.

this reason.

I'm surprised this isn't actionable. Seems a bit too dark and serious to fall under parody. Though I guess there have been several comics and comic characters over the years from the evil Hyperion to the Plutonian that have done essentially the same thing without legal action by DC.
